Reading Bowell's Life Of Johnson With James Gould Cozzens
Imagine being able to look over the shoulder of your favorite author as he reads a book that you and he both like. Well I just had a an experience a bit like that and thanks to my hours of tedious typing you can share the experience. James Gould Cozzens might not be your favorite author and, even more improbably you might not like Boswell's Life of Johnsons, but it is best I can do.
Although I think George Will is entirely wrong about the IRS scandal, I am forever grateful to him. In the early eighties, one of his columns recommended Guard of Honor by James Gould Cozzens. I was still using Worcester Public Library a lot back then. For most of my career it was just a short walk from whichever building I happened to be in at the time. Guard of Honor was not there, but by a great stroke of luck I picked up Morning, Noon and Night, his last novel, which was not well received.
It was fortunate, because at least by my lights Cozzens kept getting better, His first work Confusion, published while he was still at Harvard, was tough to get through and I still have not made it through Michael Scarlett.
Cozzens himself was embarrassed enough by his early work that you will find that in the other books mentioned at the front of By Love Possessed.the lists starts with SS San Pedro published in 1931. To the extent that I am a serious book collector, it is mainly focused on works by and about Cozzens.
I realize that my appreciation for Cozzens is indicative of a certain kind of conservativism. If you wanted to pick a theme to characterize the works of Cozzens that he did not disown, it might well be "Men at Work" - middle-aged, WASP men at that. We get the sailors on San Pedro, who are a bit exotic, but then we get quite a few people who are relatively large fish in small ponds practicing law, politics, medicine and ministry. Guard of Honor gave Cozzens a much broader canvass, but in some ways it is those same type of guys caught up in a great enterprise.
Matthew Bruccoli who died in 2008 is best known for his work on F. Scott Fitzgerald. He also did quite a bit of work on Cozzens, He got to know Cozzens pretty well. It might be a stretch, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Bruccoli (born in 1931) was Cozzen's(born in 1903) Boswell, I have evidence of Cozzens fondness for Brucolli. There is a limited edition of a short story by Cozzens titled A Rope For Doctor Webster . I have copy XLVIII inscribed to James Meriwether. Cozzens wrote

At any rate, Professor Bruccoli had one heck of a book collection much of which has ended up at the Caliban Book Shop in Pittsburgh, From them I bought something I find truly extraordinary. James Gould Cozzens's personal copy of Boswell's Life of Johnson with passages marked by Cozzens.
What I feel in common with both Johnson and Cozzens is a respect, perhaps even reverence of a sort, for the institutions that preserve civilization along with an inability to be really of them.
At any rate, a treasure like this must be shared. So I have tediously typed out the passages from Boswell that Cozzens marked, I'm listening for how they might have echoed in Cozzens's novels, but I think I might save the commentary for another post.

Give'm Hell 54th - On Confederate Monuments In New Orleans
I met Michael Schaffner at the kick-off point of the sesquicentennial of the Harrisburg Grand Review of the United State Colored Troops in November. He and I had both showed up early so we had some time to chat. I was there as somebody who was going to watch the parade which sadly was the smallest group. Mike was marching as a reenactor. He is with Company B of the 54th Massachusetts which is based in Washington DC. Mike has done a lot of civil war reenacting, but now that he portrays an officer in the 54th, he delivers a fiery speech on the contribution of black troops to Union victory, not only directly but also from the inspiration they provided to the South's labor force to head for freedom.

Any way we became facebook buds and just recently I read a rather passionate screed he wrote on the subject of Confederate monuments, which he gave me permission to publish:
Yesterday I made a semi-flip comment about the Confederate monuments in New Orleans, but the truth is I feel quite seriously that towns have a perfect right, even obligation, to purge themselves of these grotesque glorifications of a shameful cause. The arguments for keeping the Confederate monuments in New Orleans strike me as weak, even disingenuous.
As one example we can look at the Beauregard monument: in the statue of “native son” Beauregard, he appears not as a young officer in Mexico before the war, or as a prominent businessman after, but as a commander in the forces of a racist rebellion against the republic – *our republic, the one whose flag we all pledge allegiance to.
Moreover, the statue was raised after most of those soldiers were dead, in a period bracketed by Plessy v. Ferguson and the founding of the SCV on one hand, and on the other by the apogee of the KKK. Rather than an innocent commemoration of the past, it served as active propaganda for restoration of a violently racist regime.
And Lee's monument has no more reason to stay in New Orleans than the one our soldiers took down of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad.
These excrescences of white supremacy are not something that can be ameliorated by interpretive plaques. If plaques had the power of monumental sculpture no one would bother with the expense of casting bronze. They should come down, to be replaced by monuments to people who made positive contributions to the city.
There shouldn’t be a problem finding those – New Orleans has been around for two centuries and the Confederacy was there for scarcely a year.

Personally I would rather see more monuments while leaving the existing ones in place, so we could all have these massive "WTF?'s and then reflect on what we are doing right now that might look different in 100 years. In the comment section of the post, Mike added something that gives some more context.
We need to look at monuments on a case by case basis, but in that light having statues to Lee, Davis, and Beauregard in New Orleans, but not to Farragut, Butler, or any of the enslaved peoples of the "black trail of tears" does a disservice to both history and the present.

When we were chatting pre-parade,Mike cleared up for me something that I had been puzzling about. Thanks to Governor Andrews insistence. the 54th Mass was never redesignated, but it was managed after mid-1863 as part of the United States Colored Troops.
During the Civil War the regular army remained small. West Point had less than 100 graduates per year pre-war. The officers of the bulk of the locally raised units were often selected on the basis of local politics and prestige. Any way we became facebook buds and just recently I read a rather passionate screed he wrote on the subject of Confederate monuments, which he gave me permission to publish:
Yesterday I made a semi-flip comment about the Confederate monuments in New Orleans, but the truth is I feel quite seriously that towns have a perfect right, even obligation, to purge themselves of these grotesque glorifications of a shameful cause. The arguments for keeping the Confederate monuments in New Orleans strike me as weak, even disingenuous.
As one example we can look at the Beauregard monument: in the statue of “native son” Beauregard, he appears not as a young officer in Mexico before the war, or as a prominent businessman after, but as a commander in the forces of a racist rebellion against the republic – *our republic, the one whose flag we all pledge allegiance to.
Moreover, the statue was raised after most of those soldiers were dead, in a period bracketed by Plessy v. Ferguson and the founding of the SCV on one hand, and on the other by the apogee of the KKK. Rather than an innocent commemoration of the past, it served as active propaganda for restoration of a violently racist regime.
And Lee's monument has no more reason to stay in New Orleans than the one our soldiers took down of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad.
These excrescences of white supremacy are not something that can be ameliorated by interpretive plaques. If plaques had the power of monumental sculpture no one would bother with the expense of casting bronze. They should come down, to be replaced by monuments to people who made positive contributions to the city.
There shouldn’t be a problem finding those – New Orleans has been around for two centuries and the Confederacy was there for scarcely a year.

Personally I would rather see more monuments while leaving the existing ones in place, so we could all have these massive "WTF?'s and then reflect on what we are doing right now that might look different in 100 years. In the comment section of the post, Mike added something that gives some more context.
We need to look at monuments on a case by case basis, but in that light having statues to Lee, Davis, and Beauregard in New Orleans, but not to Farragut, Butler, or any of the enslaved peoples of the "black trail of tears" does a disservice to both history and the present.

When we were chatting pre-parade,Mike cleared up for me something that I had been puzzling about. Thanks to Governor Andrews insistence. the 54th Mass was never redesignated, but it was managed after mid-1863 as part of the United States Colored Troops.
During the Civil War the regular army remained small. West Point had less than 100 graduates per year pre-war. The officers of the bulk of the locally raised units were often selected on the basis of local politics and prestige. On Becoming Unstuck In Time

I've been thinking about easing up just a bit on forbes.com to start to get with some of the projects I have assigned myself for this blog. I keep thinking that if I just stopped goofing off so much
ing off so much - You know doing things like playing Scrabble on facebook where my record since June 10, 2014 is 459/491/1 and am desperately trying to get to even - I could do it all, but it is just not happening. And of course my covivant who is also my business partner expects me to do some real work.
The latest project that I have assigned myself starts with an illustration as to why I should stay away from Abebooks, if I don't want to die broke. I found something irresistible, A copy of a 1934 edition of Boswell's life of Johnson that was owned by James Gould Cozzens. It was from the collection of Matthew J. Bruccoli who was Cozzen's biographer and I'm pretty sure friend to the extent that Cozzens was capable of having a friend.
It is interesting that Bruccoli's wikipedia bio focuses on his expertise on F. Scott Fitzgerald. There is something even more intriguing. Cozzens is known as a chronicler of the Wascpocracy of which he is firmly a part. Some of the WASPs in his masterpiece By Love Possessed set in a fictional Pennsylvania county seat in the early to mid fifties have a fond condescending relationship to the "negroes' in the town who seem to be all related to a single escaped slave two or three generation back, whose current patriarch makes sure that they only serve the "best" families in town. They feel under assault, though, by Catholics and Jews. These attitudes were ascribed to Cozzens himself, which stirred up quite a bit of controversy. It was an unfair attack, Cozzens had a fairly jaundiced view of humanity regardless of race or religion.
Oddly enough in our generation the Waspocracy ended up being swamped. The best evidence of that is that the Supreme Court has no Protestants on it and its most conservative member is of Italian descent and a graduate of a Jesuit high school.
At any rate Bruccoli has an odd background to become the chronicler of the chronicler of the Waspocracy. Ethnic Italian family in the Bronx. Graduate of the Bronx High School of Science. There must be an interesting story there.
So at any rate added to my unfinished projects for this blog is transcribing the Boswell passages that Cozzens highlighted. Of course before I do that I have to reread Boswell and in the process of doing that I have to read some of the things that Johnson wrote, since for the most part I relate to the guy only from his sayings which are really great. Somehow I just can't get the poetry. The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia is pretty compelling though.
And then in the process of doing all this reading I find myself getting hooked by a Jean Shepherd biography - Excelsior You Fathead. So I'm bouncing between the three of them and somehow it is all connected. In some ways, for many of us, Jean Shepherd is our Samuel Johnson and because of his peculiar relationship with us through the radio, we are all his Boswell.
I sometimes say that after Middlemarch, there is really no point in having any more novels, but I think it is fair to make an exception for Cozzens and Shepherd who both chronicled different aspects of the American experience in different ways. Nobody has really done it yet for the almost entirely dethnicized descendants of the Irish Famine, although Matthew Thomas in We Are Not Ourselves gives it a pretty good shot.
So my unstuckness in time is partially literary as I connect Samuel Johnson and Margaret Fuller and George Eliot and James Gould Cozzens to Jean Shepherd and those of us who are walking around and scratching today.
The other thing that brings it up for me is family memories, of which I appear to have more than my share. One of my young cousins as a school project interviewed me as kind of a member of my generation. It was a very odd experience. He is 16 and my first cousin twice removed. I was telling him stories about his great great grandmother, whom I remember pretty vividly. As I branched into other family events I told him about something that had happened over twenty years ago and I commented that he was there, which is kind of idiotic. Of course I was thinking of his father.
Nobody ever told me a story about one of my great great grandparents. One of my great grandparents fought, well more like served, for the Union during the Civil War, but the only family memory I ever got about that was that he was in the infantry. I learned quite a bit more by doing research and his portrait which was hidden in attic when I was a lad hangs in my living room. I even may have stood not far from where he camped exactly 150 years after the battle in which he came within the sound of the guns.
So I'm telling this kid about hearing a story 50 years ago about something that happened over 60 years before that and somehow it all is seamlessly connected.
