Julien Icher documenting Lafayette Trail with Frank Morrill of Charlton Historical Society at Rider Tavern

The Charlton Historical Society and the American Friends of Lafayette will join with
other community groups in commemorating the reception of
Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de Lafayette.  Known to
Americans simply as ‘Lafayette’ or sometimes ‘the Marquis,’ a title he had renounced,
Lafayette was considered the “hero of two worlds” as he played a critical role in the
successes of both the American and French Revolutions.

Invited by President Monroe to visit the republic as it approached its 50th birthday,
his reception in America was like nothing before or since.  Everywhere he went
he was mobbed by crowds and entertained with great ceremony.

In celebrating Lafayette, who turned 67 during the tour, making him the only
surviving Major General who had served under George Washington, Americans
were celebrating their experiment in government by the people with the veterans of the
Revolution still among them.  Divided by one of the most bitter Presidential contests in
our history, they put aside differences to celebrate Lafayette and freedom.

Among those greeting Lafayette (portrayed by Ben Goldman)  will be:

Alan Hoffman - President American Friends of Lafayette and translator
of Lafayette In America
Julien Icher - Developer of Lafayette Trail App - Julien accompanied President Macron on his
White House visit.
Bud Holland - Bud is a World War II veteran credited with service in the
Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns including the Battle of The Bulge
Senator Anne M. Gobbi and other public officials
Frank Morrill - Former President of Charlton Historical Society

Among the organizations sending contingents to greet Lafayette are

Colonel Henry Knox Regimental Color Guard - Sons of The American Revolution
General Ebenezer Learned Chapter - Daughters of the American Revolution
Colonial Craftsman of Colonial Massachusetts
Veterans of Foreign Wars
